At Katie’s Kickers, we believe the best way to motivate our little swimmers to want to learn about water safety is by making our lessons interactive and engaging! In fact, incorporating fun and games into
swimming lessons can be highly effective in teaching crucial safety skills to our youngest students. Below are 4 creative water safety activities that you can try with your children at home to incorporate and build upon our water safety swimming lessons at Katie’s Kickers!
Put a water safety twist on the classic game of Simon Says by incorporating important safety commands and swimming skills. For example, “Simon says float on your back,” or “Simon says practice your front crawl.” This game not only reinforces essential swimming techniques but also encourages participants to listen attentively and follow instructions, which are critical skills in emergency situations.
For your older children, let them divide up into teams and then set up and supervise a safe relay race where each team must simulate a water rescue scenario. One team member can pretend to be a struggling swimmer while their teammates work together to safely bring them to shore using proper rescue techniques taught in class. This activity promotes teamwork, communication, and quick thinking, all while reinforcing important water safety skills.
Test your children’s knowledge of water safety facts with a fun trivia game. Create flashcards or use a quiz app to ask questions about topics such as the importance of wearing a life jacket, identifying safe swimming areas, and recognizing signs of distress in the water. Incorporate rewards or small prizes to make the game even more engaging and competitive.
Have creative or artistic children? Ask them to draw, design, and craft life jackets using colorful fabric, markers, and stickers. Afterward, host a “fashion show” where they can showcase their unique designs. This activity not only promotes water safety awareness but also fosters creativity and self-expression.
By combining essential safety skills with engaging activities, we at Katie’s Kickers can empower children to become confident and competent swimmers while emphasizing the importance of staying safe in and around the water!
